Sports massage offers numerous benefits that go beyond just helping athletes. Whether you’re a professional athlete, an amateur, or simply someone who enjoys regular exercise, a sports massage can significantly enhance your physical and mental well-being.

Benefits of Sports Massage:

Improved Flexibility
Tense muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues can restrict your range of motion. Regular sports massage helps relax tight muscles, improving flexibility and enhancing performance in activities like running, jumping, and lifting. Increased flexibility also helps counteract the natural decline in flexibility that comes with ageing.

Better Performance
Even a short massage (just 10 minutes) can increase mitochondria levels in your muscles, as found by researchers at McMaster University. Mitochondria, known as the "powerhouse of the cell," produce energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). More mitochondria mean your muscles convert oxygen into ATP more efficiently, giving them an extra boost when needed.

Reduced Muscle Pain
During intense physical activity, your muscles might produce lactic acid, leading to soreness and discomfort. Sports massage helps break up lactic acid, allowing your liver to remove it more efficiently. Regular massages can reduce post-workout stiffness and soreness, making your training sessions more comfortable.

Injury Prevention
Sports massage can help prevent injuries by loosening up muscles before training sessions, reducing the risk of strains and sprains. Post-workout massages help muscles relax, preventing the development of painful trigger points and other conditions that could affect performance and overall health.

Psychological Benefits
Beyond physical benefits, sports massage offers psychological advantages such as relaxation, improved sleep quality, and reduced anxiety. For professional athletes, managing mental stress is crucial. A sports massage helps decompress both body and mind, enhancing overall performance and well-being.

Techniques Used
In addition to sports massage, other manual therapy techniques such as electrotherapy and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are utilised to facilitate recovery.

Electrotherapy: This involves using electrical currents to stimulate muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, and enhance muscle function.
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF): A dynamic stretching technique combining muscle contraction and relaxation to enhance flexibility, strength, and coordination.
By combining these techniques, personalised care is provided to meet the specific needs of each individual, helping to maximise performance and prevent future injuries.

Hello! I’m Matthew, an enthusiastic Physiotherapist dedicated to helping you maintain an active lifestyle and overcome injuries.

I hold a BSc in Sports Science and a Masters in Physiotherapy. My commitment to excellence is reflected in my memberships with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health Care Professional Council (HCPC), ensuring that my care is regulated and based on the latest evidence-based research.

My experience in Physiotherapy includes senior roles working with football clubs such as QPR FC and Ipswich Town FC. I’ve also had the unique experience of providing Physiotherapy to a well-known Ultra High Net Worth Individual (UHNWI), traveling with their family throughout Europe. This has enriched my professional journey, allowing me to bring my expertise to diverse settings.

In addition to my private practice, I still hold part time positions within the NHS as a First Contact Practitioner. This role allows me to establish close links with Orthopaedic consultants and other medical experts.

I specialise in the treatment of lower limb injuries and spinal conditions. My approach is holistic, considering not just the physical aspects of recovery but also the emotional and lifestyle factors that contribute to overall well-being.

Continuing education is a priority for me. I regularly attend CPD events to stay updated on the latest advancements in Physiotherapy. This ensures that I can provide my patients with the most effective and up-to-date treatments available.

Outside of work, I have a young family and enjoy staying active through swimming, cycling, and weight training. I also have a passion for running and I am excited to have signed up to the London 2025 marathon.
